Futures a little mixed but pointing upwards this morning.   Exxon Mobil records a 42 BILLION dollar profit!  Whew, must be good to be in there corporate offices!  And people were giving John Thain a hard time about his super expensive rug in his office.  Those Exxon guys must be spending that kind of money on office trinkets!  Anyway, we’re watching the tech sector today and more of the nasdaq.  AMZN, AAPL, RIMM are names that could see some volatility today so we likey.  It’s friday, we have a new President, and the weekend is here!  Make your money, don’t get greedy, and TRADE SMART!

Futures opened a little higher this morning despite negative earnings reports and other negative data.  Has the street priced all that in already?  Possible that they’ve priced a lot of it in, but we’ll see where investor sentiment lies.  Remember, the market churns on fear and greed so this could be a headfake rally.  Remember to stick to your game plan!  Reduce your risk in position size and decide whether to keep tight stops or wider ones with smaller positions.  And don’t forget… A gain is a GAIN!

Could buyouts give the markets a little jump start?

Posted by Trader1 On January - 26 - 2009ADD COMMENTS

Futures up this morning.  The steet likes the Pfizer/Wyeth buyout news.  This could potentially lead to a semi nice rally.  Yeah, there’s a lot of negative news and factors that can continue to make the markets drop even further, but as traders we need to continue to stay vigilant on could spark some rallys.  Remember we can play both sides of the trade and if things are looking good why fight the tape!  WYE had a big pop then drop this morning as I’m sure we’ll hear more news on this deal in the coming days.  Keep it on the watch list but might want to let some of the dust settle first.  The offer looks at close to $50 a share and with it trading at 44 give a little cause for cautiousness.  The opportunity is in the bio/pharma sector now.  There’s other names that have picked up some steam from this news.

Housing numbers also came back pretty positive today so we could see more upside through the day.  But if things start to get ugly don’t be afraid to take small losses.  Better safe than sorry!

Saturday afternoon thoughts on the markets

Posted by Trader1 On January - 24 - 2009ADD COMMENTS

Sorry I haven’t been on in the past few days.  Had some medical things to take care of, but the markets kept on without me :) .  Now that we have a new President in place, we’ll really get to see what we have in store this year for the markets.  It looks like the big money influences are moving fast at trying to influence the new President Obama.  Looks like big money is pushing for a bailout and now it’s trying to be pushed through in Washington.  Hmm, how did that work out the first time?  All kidding aside, it could be a little different this time around, especially if there are more specifics in place in where and how the money is to be spent.  “Green” stocks seem to be ones to watch as President Obama has seemed to mention his intentions on being more environmentally sound.  I’ve wondered, can the markets still be traded if things continue on down, but then I think about the recession of old and wasn’t it those who were market savvy the ones who still continued to stay afloat in those days?  Of course those who were “in” the market at that time took a beating, but I think those who really knew how to trade it continued to prosper.  So during this weekend, it might be a good time to reevaluate, are you still an “investor” or are you a trader?

Have a great weekend!

Futures opened lower this morning, the Financial sector taking a beating.  The owners of stocktradeteam.com had a great time meeting together last week.  Exciting things in the works even in the current economic conditions.  Let’s just see what happens with the overall markets.  Today is the inauguration of President Obama.  Will we see a midday rally?  We’ll keep an eye on things to see which way things may go.  Funny how big days in the political arena usually have big days on the stock market.  Big money is at work in both cases so we’ll see which side will move the markets today!  Today is a day for sure to watch the indexes.

Potential Afternoon sell off

Posted by Trader1 On January - 9 - 2009ADD COMMENTS

Futures slightly lower this morning.  We got the bounce we were expecting yesterday, that 90 on the SPY held support.  It’s one to keep watching.  Markets don’t seem to like weekends that have had a lot of negativity.  We could see some selling today as a lot of players don’t like holding over the weekend as anything can happen by Monday.  We’re gonna be out of town for a few days next week as the management team gets to visit with each other and get some new strategic plannning in place, but we’ll try to post things if we see things.  So until then…  Trade Smart!

Futures down again this morning, not sure how much downside action we’ll see or how fast it’ll come, but we’re pretty sure that it’s coming.  If it stays below 90 we could test another dollar down.  With yesterday’s sell off and the news trying to paint a negative picture we might see a small bounce and some consolidation, but if it does break down then we should see more downside, but we think there might be that bounce first.  We’re watching the indexes today.
